Jolyon Palmer says ‘information overload’ could deny Lewis Hamilton his eighth F1 title in 2026

Jolyon Palmer has admitted that he doesn’t see Lewis Hamilton winning his eighth Formula 1 drivers’ championship this season.

Ferrari are hoping to end their 18-year wait for a title this year, and both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will believe they have what it takes to make that happen.

Leclerc came out on top last season, beating Hamilton by 86 points and scoring all seven of Ferrari’s Grand Prix podiums.

However, Hamilton has already been backed by Johnny Herbert to succeed based on what he’s seen in testing, and despite a tricky start in Bahrain, he got up to speed quickly during the final week of running.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to convince Jolyon Palmer that he would win his first title since 2020, and his lack of a permanent race engineer might be playing a part in his prediction.

Jolyon Palmer thinks a lack of a permanent race engineer could cost Lewis Hamilton his 8th F1 title

Palmer was speaking about Hamilton’s chances on the Chequered Flag Podcast ahead of the opening race in Melbourne.

He said: “He has a temporary interim race engineer who’s a race engineer that has worked with Ferrari before, worked with Kimi Raikkonen in there, and has a lot of experience.

“He’s gone away from his race engineer from last year, and he’s expecting to get a new permanent one coming up. But it’s not good for Lewis really to have that level of doubt and a change of personnel before such a difficult set of regulations to get your teeth into.

“Communication is going to be so important. There’s going to be information overload, I think, for the drivers.

“So you want to build up a rapport with your race engineer. You want to know each other inside out, and Lewis hasn’t got that.

“So he was a bit jovial in the last Bahrain test, but I don’t know. Ferrari looked good, but I thought Leclerc looked really good as well, and Lewis is going to be up against him.”

Later in the podcast, Palmer was asked whether Hamilton could win his eighth title this year, and he continued: “I don’t think Hamilton will win number eight this year.

“I hope he can win some races. I’d love to see him challenge again. I think there’s too much going against him for him to win number eight.

“But who writes off Lewis Hamilton? Probably a fool!”

Jolyon Palmer admits Ferrari’s rear wing trick ‘blew my mind’ during F1 testing

One of the most interesting parts of pre-season testing was seeing all the different innovations designed by the teams as they look to tackle F1’s new ruleset.

Ferrari’s car caught the attention of Andrea Stella during the second week, and they debuted a unique exhaust solution as well as their now-infamous flipping rear wing.

Asked about the ‘Macarena’ wing, as it has been dubbed by some people, Palmer said: “It blew my mind when I saw that in testing!

“I’ve watched a lot of Formula 1 cars. I’ve seen a lot of modern-day Formula 1, where I know in the past, there was a Tyrrell that ran with six wheels.

“Just seeing this Ferrari rear wing, so when they activate what looks like DRS, it’s now called active aero, straight line mode.

“But the wing flips, inverts upside down, which means that they’re going to get a better top speed, effectively less drag.

“I don’t even know if they’ll run it. They literally did it for one lap of testing, came back in the pits, changed it back over, and then we never saw it again.

“But it was enough for them to get some data, enough for us to get a good look at it and replay it out to the world so everyone else has seen it. Pretty cool innovation.”

Lewis Hamilton was ‘experimenting’ with Ferrari’s 2026 car during testing

Hamilton will be well aware of how much work he needs to do to get the better of Leclerc, let alone his rivals at Mercedes, McLaren and Red Bull.

Nobody will know the true pace of any of their rivals’ cars until qualifying in Melbourne, but it’s believed that last season’s top four manufacturers are still the teams to beat.

Hamilton was ‘visibly experimenting’ with Ferrari’s car during testing as he tried to work out the best way to tackle corners and energy recovery.

The likes of Hamilton and Fernando Alonso have been through so many rule changes in F1 that their ability to adapt should be better than nearly everyone else on the grid.

However, the struggles Hamilton had with the ground-effect cars compared to the previous generation suggest that’s not always the case, and might be where some of Palmer’s uncertainty is coming from.
